Nimesulide,
a COX-2 selective drug, possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic
properties. Moreover, it has low gastro-intestinal and renal
toxicity.
Its
main purpose is to treat acute pain, the symptomatic treatment of
osteoarthritis and primary dysmenorrhoea .
As
for other NSAIDs the use of Nimesulide is preffered for the shortest
duration necessary to control symptoms in patients with acute pain or
primary dysmenorrhoea. The efficacy of Nimesulide was consistently
superior to placebo with its particularly rapid onset action.
The
maximum duration and dose of a treatment course with nimesulide is 15
days, 100 mg twice a day, to minimize the risk of hepatotoxicity.
